photoshop text tool not working

braza spots why your text won't show - wrong color, huge font size, or a hidden layer - and points at the fix.

the type tool 'not working' is almost never a bug - your text is usually there but invisible, off-canvas, or absurdly sized. it's one of a few quick causes. here's how to find which one is yours and type normally again.

or do it yourself

  1. 1check the text color in the options bar at the top - white text on a white background looks like nothing's happening. set it to a visible color.
  2. 2look at the font size - if it's set huge (like 700pt) a single letter fills the screen; if it's tiny it's invisible. set something like 24pt.
  3. 3make sure you committed the last text: press the checkmark in the options bar or ctrl/cmd+enter, then click to start fresh.
  4. 4press d then x to reset colors, or pick the type tool (t) again - a stuck tool state can block typing.
  5. 5still nothing? go to edit > preferences > type and check 'enable missing glyph protection', or reset the tool: right-click the type tool icon in the options bar > reset tool.

let braza do this with you

braza is a tiny on-screen guide that points at the right buttons and talks you through it, on windows and mac.

common questions

why can't i type in photoshop?

usually the text color matches the background, the font size is enormous or tiny, or the previous text layer wasn't committed. fix the color/size and press ctrl/cmd+enter to commit.

my photoshop text is invisible - where did it go?

check the layer is visible and not below another layer, the color contrasts with the background, and the font size is reasonable. it's almost always one of those three.
