how to remove an object in photoshop
HeyBraza tells you which of the three removal tools fits your photo, so you don't fight content-aware fill on a busy background.
photoshop has three ways to delete an object, and picking the wrong one is why the hole ends up smudged. the right choice depends on what's behind the object - a plain wall, a busy scene, or something small. here's each, and when to reach for it.
short answer
make a rough selection around the object with the lasso, then use edit > generative fill with an empty prompt (best on busy backgrounds), edit > content-aware fill (good on plain backgrounds), or the remove tool from the toolbar (fastest for small objects). photoshop fills the gap with matching pixels.
or do it yourself
- 1select the object roughly - the lasso or object selection tool is enough, and leave a little margin around it.
- 2for a busy or detailed background, use edit > generative fill, leave the prompt empty and click generate - photoshop rebuilds what was behind it.
- 3for a plain background (a wall, the sky), use edit > content-aware fill and adjust the green sampling area on the left if the fill looks off.
- 4for a small object, grab the remove tool (j) from the toolbar and brush over it.
- 5zoom in and clean up any smudge with the clone stamp or the spot healing brush.

what's the best tool to remove an object in photoshop?
generative fill for busy backgrounds, content-aware fill for plain ones, and the remove tool for small objects. the difference is how much detail photoshop has to invent to fill the hole.
why does content-aware fill leave a smudge?
it's sampling the wrong pixels. open edit > content-aware fill and paint the green sampling overlay only over areas that match what should be behind the object, or switch to generative fill instead.
is the remove tool in every version of photoshop?
the remove tool arrived in photoshop 2024. on older versions use content-aware fill or the spot healing brush in content-aware mode.
