how to change line art color in procreate

HeyBraza shows the alpha-lock swipe then the fill-layer step so you recolor your lines without painting over them by hand.

you want to turn your black sketch lines into color, but repainting every stroke is misery. the trick is alpha lock plus a single fill - two steps people don't connect. here's the sequence on your ipad.

or do it yourself

  1. 1open the layers panel and tap the layer that holds your line art so it's the active layer.
  2. 2two-finger swipe right on that layer to turn on alpha lock - the thumbnail shows a checkerboard.
  3. 3pick your new color in the top-right swatch.
  4. 4tap the layer again, choose 'fill layer' (or drag the color onto the canvas) to recolor every line at once.
  5. 5two-finger swipe right again to release alpha lock when you're happy.

let HeyBraza do this with you

HeyBraza is a tiny on-screen guide that points at the right buttons and talks you through it, on windows and mac.

common questions

how do i change the color of my sketch lines in procreate?

turn on alpha lock for the line layer (two-finger swipe right), pick a color, then use 'fill layer' - it recolors only the existing line pixels.

can i recolor line art that's on the same layer as my coloring?

not cleanly - alpha lock fills the whole layer, so keep line art on its own layer if you want to recolor just the lines.
