clipping masks are how you color inside line art without going over the edges in procreate - but the control is hidden in the layer menu and it only works if it sits directly above the layer you want to clip to. here's exactly how to set one up on your ipad.

- 1tap the layers icon (the stacked-squares button, top right) to open the layers panel.
- 2add a new layer with the '+' and make sure it sits directly above the layer you want to color into.
- 3tap that new layer once to open layer options, then tap 'clipping mask' - a small arrow appears showing it's clipped.
- 4draw or colordrop on the clipped layer - color now only shows over the pixels of the layer below.
- 5to remove it, tap the layer again and tap 'clipping mask' a second time to release it.

why is my clipping mask painting on the whole canvas?
the layer below is probably empty - a clipping mask only shows where the layer beneath it already has pixels, so put your shape or line art on that lower layer first.
what's the difference between a clipping mask and alpha lock?
alpha lock locks one layer to its own pixels; a clipping mask is a separate layer that clips to the one below, so you can edit or delete it without touching the original.
