  1. 1set your bleed first: document menu → setup → document setup → bleed tab, then enter your printer's bleed (often 3 mm).
  2. 2extend your background and any edge images out to the bleed guides so nothing important sits near the trim.
  3. 3go to file menu → export → export.
  4. 4on the left, pick a pdf/x preset (for example pdf/x-1a or pdf/x-4) as your printer requires.
  5. 5on the right, enable 'include bleed' (and printer marks / crop marks), then click export and save.
