how to create a symbol in sketch

symbols are how you reuse buttons, cards, and icons in sketch - change the source once and every instance updates. the trick is knowing where the create command lives and what happens to the source. here's the exact path.
short answer
select the layers and press cmd-y (or layer > symbol > create symbol). name it, choose whether the source lives on the symbols page, then insert copies from the components view or via the command bar with 'y'.

- 1select a layer, group, or several layers you want to reuse.
- 2click 'create' (the symbol icon) in the toolbar, or choose 'layer' > 'symbol' > 'create symbol' - or press cmd-y.
- 3give the symbol a name in the dialog.
- 4choose whether to send the source to the 'symbols' page or keep it on the current page.
- 5to drop a copy anywhere, switch to the components view (top-left tab) and click 'insert', or press y for the command bar.
