- 1select a layer, group, or several layers you want to reuse.
- 2click 'create' (the symbol icon) in the toolbar, or choose 'layer' > 'symbol' > 'create symbol' - or press cmd-y.
- 3give the symbol a name in the dialog.
- 4choose whether to send the source to the 'symbols' page or keep it on the current page.
- 5to drop a copy anywhere, switch to the components view (top-left tab) and click 'insert', or press y for the command bar.

what's the difference between a symbol source and an instance?
the source is the master you edit; instances are reusable copies. editing the source updates every instance, but you can't have more than one source.
where did my new symbol go?
if you chose 'send to symbols page', it's on the new 'symbols' page above the layer list; otherwise it stays on your current page with a purple name.
