affinity publisher data merge creating too many pages
HeyBraza diagnoses why your merge exploded into thousands of pages and points at the range and layout controls that rein it in.
running a data merge in affinity and ending up with thousands of pages is a classic shock - it's almost always a delimiter, layout, or range issue, not a bug. here's how to set it up so it generates the pages you actually want.
or do it yourself
- 1open the data merge panel (window menu → layout → data merge) and check your source is added with the right delimiter and quote for your csv.
- 2for many records per page (labels, cards), use the data merge layout tool to draw an n-up grid and set rows and columns - don't put one record on a full page.
- 3set 'use' to range and type the records you want (for example 1-50) instead of merging the whole file at once.
- 4insert fields with 'insert field' for text and 'bind field' for picture frames, then preview before generating.
- 5click generate to build a new merged document, then export it - fix the setup here, not after thousands of pages exist.

why does affinity data merge create thousands of pages?
it makes one set of pages per record. if each record fills a whole page, a big csv balloons - use a grid layout (data merge layout tool) and/or a record range to control it.
my csv fields aren't showing up in data merge - why?
the first row must contain field names, and the delimiter/quote must match your file. re-add the source and check those settings.
