midjourney aspect ratio not working

midjourney images start as squares, and the --ar parameter is meant to change that - but people constantly add it and still get a 1:1 image. it's almost always a typo, a spacing issue, or a default fighting your prompt. here's how to set it so it actually sticks.

  1. 1add the parameter at the very end of your prompt as --ar 16:9 (or --ar 9:16, 3:2, etc.) - it must be two hyphens, 'ar', a space, then the ratio with a colon.
  2. 2check there's a space before --ar and no stray text after the numbers - a missing space is the number-one reason it's ignored.
  3. 3to avoid typing it every time, click the settings (gear) icon next to the imagine bar and set your default aspect ratio there.
  4. 4if the settings slider is forcing a size you don't want, the --ar in your prompt overrides it - so set one or the other, not conflicting values.
  5. 5rerun the prompt - the new generation should now come out in your chosen shape.
