generative expand grows a photo past its original edges and invents matching scenery - but it only fires after you drag the canvas out, and missing that step is why people think it's broken. here's the right order in firefly web and in photoshop.

in firefly, open the edit tab, pick 'generative expand' and drag the handles outward. in photoshop it's the crop tool instead - drag the crop handles past the image edge, then click generative expand with the prompt left blank to match the existing scene.

- 1in the firefly web app, open your image in the 'edit' tab and pick 'generative expand' from the left toolbar, then drag the handles outward or choose a new aspect ratio.
- 2in photoshop instead: select the crop tool and drag the crop handles past the image edge to add empty canvas.
- 3with the larger canvas set, click 'generative expand' in the contextual task bar (leave the prompt blank to match the scene).
- 4press 'generate' and pick the best of the three variations.
- 5if a seam shows, expand a little less at a time, or run a second pass on just the seam.

you have to enlarge the canvas first - drag the crop handles past the edge, then click generative expand; on an unchanged canvas it stays greyed out.
