affinity splits its tools into separate modes - older versions call them personas, the newest app calls them studios. people get stuck because the tool they want lives in a different mode, and the switcher isn't obvious. here's where it is and how to move between them.

the row of mode icons at the top-left of the toolbar is the switcher: photo for layers and retouching, develop for raw, liquify for reshaping. if a tool or panel seems missing you're almost always in the wrong mode - and from develop you must click 'develop' to commit first.

- 1look at the top-left of the toolbar - the row of mode icons there is the persona/studio switcher.
- 2click 'photo' (the pixel studio) for layers, masks, retouching and filters - this is where most editing happens.
- 3click 'develop' to process a raw file's exposure and colour; click 'liquify' to push pixels around for reshaping.
- 4from the develop studio you must click 'develop' to commit before the photo tools become available.
- 5if a tool or panel seems missing, you're almost always in the wrong mode - switch back to the photo studio first.
